I recently came across this video via an Animal Planet tweet that brought me to the Discovery News blog where someone had left the youtube link in the comments. Yay science nerds with access to fancy technology.
Seems the barreleye is an appropriate creature to celebrate in a month where those of us who believe in science reveled in Darwin’s 200th birthday.

It may be sad, but this gets me interested in our economic troubles more than stock market numbers and finger pointing. It’s quite cute, and creative.
Zoos matter, yes. If people (especially children) aren’t introduced to nature up close and personal, they will never develop the kind of ethic that creates the demand for conservation.

President-Elect Obama’s appointments seem quite fortuitous for marine biologists, and this post on CHANGE.GOV makes it sound like someone might want to give me a job when I graduate. Then why did the person I interviewed with yesterday suggest there would be an immediate hiring freeze after the inauguration? I suppose it could take time to get the budget squared away, but I am hopeful that the new political climate will...

I have posted new pictures from my recent trip to california on my flickr site.
There will be more to come after I head out to sea for a week this Sunday to tag scallops. A lot of people are surprised to hear that scallops move enough to tag. As this video shows, the little buggers can book.
