A "Fisheries Disaster Area"

Wow. The waters of Eastern Massachusetts have been declared a disaster area by the feds. Fishermen of the South Coast, Cape and Islands will be recieving FEMA funding to stem the financial damage caused by this Spring’s record-breaking red tide.

People expect the damage to go far beyond just the fishermen and restauranteurs. Tourists overreact at the words “red tide” and immediately assume the waters are unsafe for swimming, which is not the case.

The folks down the road at WHOI have a page devoted to their research on this and other crazy algae blooms.

Just when I was starting to crave the summer’s littlenecks…
